I want to be super clear from the outset: you don’t need anything (except 30 minutes a week and a good attitude), but if you’re new to any of these practices, or if investing in some special things will help get you excited, here is stuff I like…
Yoga Stuff
In general, I really like the brand Manduka, although you really can’t go wrong when you’re starting out.
I use my own mat for the videos (available on this very website). It’s what I use in my regular practice. It’s a little bit cushy and a little bit sticky so you don’t slip-and-slide around. I bought it because I wanted to try out my own merch, but it’s really pretty great.
I understand that’s a little pricy, so here’s the Amazon Basics version. Ultimately, any yoga mat will do, provided it’s long enough. Some folks like a little more cushion in their mat. I am not one of them because I think it throws off balance and alignment, but find what feels right to you.
Yoga blocks are a nice way to “bring the floor closer” when folding forward — or elevate tight hips when you’re seated. I really prefer these cork blocks.
If you don’t love the cork, these Gaiam blocks are much less expensive and certainly do the trick.
You might also consider a strap, but I find that in many cases a small hand or gym towel works almost as well.
Journaling Stuff
My absolute, most-favorite journal is the Moo Lined Notebook. It comes in great colors. There’s a slip-case. I use them for everything.
I think it’s really great to find a nice fresh journal you love and pen you love to write with. These don’t have to be the fanciest. I love writing with these Sharpie Roller pens (I write in red, but you don’t have to).
Meditation
You need the least stuff for meditating. Frankly, a pair of earbuds and this website are plenty, but some people really excel by creating a special space — maybe a quiet corner with a cushion … or a special meditation chair … and something that smells good.
Another great meditation tool might be your sneakers and a walk around the block.
