Rooting to Rise

tree roots

This week, we connect with — and find gratitude for — our roots. That might mean the family that raised you. It might mean ancestors whose stories resonate. Or might be your chosen family.

“Rooting to Rise” Activities

Journal Prompt

You’ve grown into the kind of person who would seek out a course like this! Is there someone from your life — whether an influential person from your childhood, a teacher, parent or friend — who really impacted the person you’ve become. The person you are becoming.

If you only do one journal entry this week, try to make it a list of people from your life to whom you are grateful. Try to take all ten minutes exploring your earliest memories and including every single person you’ve encountered — however casually — who’s led you here.

If you choose to journal multiple times this week…

  1. Select one person from the list and spend the ten minutes thanking them. That’s right: all ten minutes. Try to elaborate on the ways in which they inspired you, and — as you explore — consider ways you can show up for others in the same way. Or maybe you already do…?
  2. Consider all of the people and systems that support your daily life without your having to ask. These are often things we take for granted because — frankly — we don’t have to work for them. How many countless people work to make those things effortless for you? (If you’re stumped, picture your morning commute, the roof over your head or the clothes on your body.)
Or, in some cases, is it actual nature that is taking care of you? How? Is there some way you can honor that gift? What’s a way to say thank you?

If you have completed the journal prompts above, then simply let yourself write for ten minutes without any rules or restrictions. Consider the prompts, your previous journal entries this week, and just let your pen go!
