Comedy, Boundaries, and Making Room for Joy

What makes room for a yes you’re actually excited about?

In this episode of Hello, Friends, I sit down with comedian Irene Bremis, co-host of Woo Woo with Rachel Dratch. I reached out as a fan, and our conversation took us from childhood family impressions to some deeply personal experiences—and plenty of laughter along the way.

Irene talks about her experience with cancer and the changes she made to protect her energy during that time. She shares why she kept her diagnosis within a small circle, stepped away from stand-up, and continued recording the podcast that brought her joy. We also talk about being her brother’s guardian and the advice her mother gave her: take care of yourself so you can care for others.

One of my favorite parts of this conversation is Irene’s description of flow onstage. After years of practice, she can connect with the audience in front of her and respond to what’s happening in the moment. It’s a beautiful point of connection with mindfulness—and with the small opportunities for presence we find while making tea or washing dishes.

We explore joy outside work, the pressure to stay positive, and why “should” can get in the way of happiness. Irene leaves us with words a friend once offered her: “You’re permanently strong, temporarily weak.”

Irene discusses her personal cancer experience and care choices, including surgery. Her account is personal experience, not medical advice or evidence that a particular approach treats cancer.
