The Road Back

rock pathway into the woods

As we turn the corner back toward home — toward the conclusion that we trust is eminent — we are forced to revisit the sites of our past trials and triumphs.

Life’s like a movie, write your own ending
Keep believing, keep pretending
We’ve done just what we set out to do.
Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.

We’ve been down this road before. It’s familiar. But it’s backwards. And somehow retracing our steps is very nearly impossible.

“The Road Back” Activities

Journal Prompt

However men try to reach me, I return their love with my love; whatever path they may travel, it leads to me in the end.
—Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 4, Verse 11

For this is my son who was dead, and is now alive again; he was lost and now is found.
— Luke 15:21

On the way out, we were looking only forward: only toward our mission. And now that we have encountered and embraced the divine (in the world and in one another), we begin to look back. Back toward the real world. Back toward home.

  1. What have you struggled with most in the last few weeks? Which week was the toughest to this point? What about it was so tough? Face that struggle again. Face that challenge. Can you somehow approach it anew and reframe it?
  2. What other do-overs would you like? That time you put your foot in your mouth? A time when you really didn’t live up to your own values or morality? As you reflect on this time (these times), can you reframe them? Can you forgive yourself? Can you leave them by the side of the road? If that’s challenging, write it as if someone you loved (a child or your dearest friend) were beating themselves up like you are, what you tell them?

If you have completed the journal prompts above, then simply let yourself write for ten minutes without any rules or restrictions. Consider the prompts, your previous journal entries this week, and just let your pen go!
